Høstens nyhetsbrev fra John Calhoun i Kiev

Forster, Anne Ng
Dear friends in Christ,
Greetings and peace to you from Kyiv, where the short autumn season is already drawing to a close, and we are awaiting the snow and cold of the approaching winter.
Here in Kyiv, we have just celebrated the first month of ministry of our new United Methodist Church Center.  This new Center is a collaborative ministry of the two UMC congregations in Kyiv, Spring of Life UMC and St. Luke’s UMC, with active leadership being provided by the pastors and lay leaders of the two communities of faith.
Each week, the Church Center is alive with spiritual, educational, and social programs.  Twice weekly, school children from our neighborhood come to the Center to receive assistance with their homework assignments and enjoy fellowship.  Once a week, our local pastor hosts a Bible study and an afternoon of activities and discussion for neighborhood youth.  Each Thursday evening, women from the two congregations and community gather in our Center for a meal, conversation, study, and prayer.  In addition to the weekend worship services of Spring of Life and St. Luke’s congregations, our Center also hosts an early Sunday worship service of a small Protestant church.
Also, we continue to offer spiritual and material assistance to neighborhood families and former street children still living in crisis.  The pastoral and lay leaders of our Church Center offer counseling and referral services to mothers seeking solutions to domestic problems, and maintain contact with city social workers and partner organizations to see that those in need are matched to available assistance programs.
In summary, our United Methodist Church Center continues to develop and mature as a place of Christian ministry and healing.  Furthermore, through these acts of evangelization, worship, and charity, we are building an even more vibrant and living United Methodist Church in Ukraine, one that thrives under indigenous leadership offering holistic ministry in the Wesleyan tradition.
On behalf of Pastors Ruslan and Vladimir and the laity of the United Methodist Church in Kyiv, I thank you for your spiritual and financial support of the ministry of our new United Methodist Church Center.  Your prayers and words of encouragement in recent times have strengthened us, and given us a spirit of hope.  We value your partnership!
In closing, please allow me to share with you an exciting announcement from our United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM).  Recently our friends at GBGM have designated Tuesday, December 3, 2013, as "Giving Tuesday."  As noted in a recent statement from the GBGM Advance office:
When you make an online donation on December 3, your gift will multiply!
For one day only, on December 3, 2013, as part of UMC #GivingTuesday, gifts made online to "Eurasia Mission Initiative - Ukraine and Moldova" through Advance account #14053A will be matched*.  As always, when you give to us through The Advance, 100 percent of your gift directly supports our ministry; overhead costs are covered through other channels.
Thank you so much for your faithful support, and for doubling your impact by making a generous gift on December 3.
* Global Ministries will allocate the “matching funds” dollar for dollar up to the first $500,000 in gifts to Advance projects received online on December 3, 2013, between 12:00 a.m. EST and 11:59 p.m.  A maximum of $10,000 per individual gift to a project will be dispersed as matching funds.  A project may receive a maximum of $50,000 in matching funds.
As you see, if you make a donation in support of our Church Center on December 3 via the GBGM Advance online payment system into Advance account #14053A, your donation will be matched by GBGM.  What a wonderful way to double the impact of your contributions to our ministry!  Just be sure to designate the gift on the online form as:  Kyiv Church Center.
For more information about GBGM's "Giving Tuesday," please read this announcement from the GBGM Advance office.
Once again, I thank you for your support of our ministry of healing and wholeness in Kyiv, and I invite your continued partnership with us.  If you have any questions about our ministry, or this wonderful opportunity to double the impact of a financial gift, please be in touch with me at any time.
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
